Campus Video Surveillance In An Age Of Insanity
Although that fact is still some what of a shock in today’s world it was quickly pointed out by one of the campus officials that a surveillance system would have done nothing to prevent this tragedy. Unfortunately I have to say on that one point they are right.
Video Surveillance Systems can benefit a campus in a lot of ways. They can deter crime, they can help provide evidence critical to the apprehension of suspects, they can provide invaluable live data to emergency response personnel at the moment of crisis but they can not deter or prevent the insanity that happened April 16th at Virginia Tech.

Samsung Standalone DVRs - Where They Fit
After much discussion with customers, vendors and our Samsung Rep we now have a very good understanding of how the Samsung Standalone DVR units fit into our product mix and how they can be of benefit to our customer base.
Coming from a PC/IT background there was a time when not a one of us had given a second thought to a DVR solution that was not PC based. But perhaps the most important thing we have learned in the last year is that not everyone thinks like we do. There are plenty of very intelligent people out there that have made a success of their business with out turning into a PDA dependant techno junkie. These people however unlike us still have a need for security. Many of them simply want a dependable and basic solution.
If that describes you then a Samsung Standalone DVR is worth your consideration. Samsung DVR’s are well respected as an upper tier product and have a two year warranty from Samsung with a 120 day advance replacement plan.
In general the biggest benefit of a Samsung DVR is they are easier to operate and have fewer potential hardware and software liabilities than their PC based rivals.
Specifically the benefits of the Samsung Standalone DVR would be the elimination of the older tape based multiplexer CCTV technology. The Samsung DVR is the simplest way to save your video in a digital format and bring your system up to date with full internet access.
With a Samsung DVR installed gone is the need to change tapes, gone is the need to stop recording if you want to play back a video clip, gone is the low resolution video, and gone is the need to be onsite and in front of the unit to have full access to its features.
To be fair and balanced the PC based systems in the right hands can definitely be a strong asset and provide a very feature rich solution. But again we have learned not everyone loves the PC like we do.
We now often tell people that if they are a PC hobbyist, have in IT staff that requested a PC based DVR, or have a very complex security need, then a PC based DVR system is most likely a good choice. If not then consider the Samssung DVR,
So no matter how big or small your security need rest assured we understand the place for both the Standalone DVR and its PC based competitor and we are here to help you come to the right DVR decision for your project.

CCTV Camera Systems Improve Car Sales
The caller was from an Auto Dealership in Denver and like most he told me they wanted cameras to watch the lot for potential trouble at night.
However this individual had already thought this through and realized that if the lot was covered with cameras then during the workday the salesman could log on to the system from their desks and watch the lot in live time. This of course would ensure that each visitor was greeted by a salesman and ultimately increase the revenue for all involved.
Apparently the current scheme boiled down to the salesmen having to hang out as long as they could by the main floor window and simply try to watch the lot for potential customers. I have to agree that being able to watch the lot in all directions from their desk should make for a lot more effective sales force.

Video Database of Crime
The database will collect clips of actual crimes in progress and will be used by law enforcement to visually identify suspects, methods of operation, weapons, etc. across multiple times and locations. The actual data will come from both public and private sources including traditional CCTV camera systems, hand held camcorders and even cell phones.
Some day a detective may be able to sit at a computer and search for bank robberies committed any where in the country by a male with a read ball cap or a certain weapon type. Access to this information of course could easily help connect the dots that would in the past take endless man hours of interviews and detective work.
At present there are fewer than 700 recognized forensic video analysts in the country but the International Association of Chiefs of Police and this program hope to change that as the amount of video evidence used in law enforcement continues to grow.

The Law Regarding Audio From A Camera Security System
Recording Audio with the Professional Grade Audio Products sold by CameraSecurityNow.com for use with a Dell based Geovision DVR is quite easy and questions about that topic come up daily.
Unfortunately many people we talk to have one or more misguided opinions as to the law in regards to audio recordings. Some people believe they have no obligation to inform anyone that audio is being recorded and others think they have some state law that takes precedence over the federal law I have attempted to educate them on. Of course both of those beliefs are in error but seldom can you change some one’s mind when they have their own preconceived notions on such topics. To help explain the basics we have listed below a notice as posted on the Louroe Electronics website in regards to Audio Surveillance.

Judging the Worth of a Camera Security System
It has been said that everything has its price. But in the business world does this truly apply to the often intangible benefits of a Camera Security System?
To be fair and balanced we should of course remember that every corporation or government entity is ultimately run by imperfect human beings that must make decisions based on real world financial limitations.
With that in mind, below are some observations from my small town:
This morning I heard on the local news that an elderly pedestrian was hit and killed just four blocks from my home by a police car over the weekend. The police car did not have an in car camera installed. The accident happened in a city where revenue generating Red Light cameras have been installed for years. Several eye witnesses have already disputed the officer’s claim that he had his lights and siren on as he traveled at high speed down the road in response to a call from assistance from a fellow officer. Unfortunately the lack of an in car camera will undoubtedly lead to countless allegations and denials in the wake of this life shattering and life ending tragedy.

TV Output from Geovision DVR Server
1) If the PC DVR server is equipped with a combo card, there is a single video out (RCA) connection on the card. If your card is designed for 8 channels, all 8 channels will be displayed on the TV. If your card is designed for 16 channels, then all 16 channels will be displayed on the TV. Combo cards consist of the GV-1120, 1240 and 1480. If you wish to show only one channel or change the overall layout of the multiple cameras on display (i.e. channel 1 is large with 3-6 on the side is small) you will need to use the software called Spot Monitoring. Spot Monitoring is only available on the GV 8.01+ software, which means you need to latest GV combo card before you can use this feature.
2) If your using the GV-250, 600, 650, or 800 capture card, then you will need to buy a separate extension card in order to have the TV output feature. The card is called a GV-Loop Through card and can output four channels. Unlike the combo cards, the GV-Loop Through card will only output one channel at a via for each connection. For example, output #1 will only output camera #1, output #3 will only output camera #3. You do not have the option to use the Spot Monitoring software with this card.
3) For those that wish to have the spot monitoring feature, but only have a GV-250, 600, 650, or 800 capture card, there is a new extension card that is available. This card is call the GV-TV Out card, and will give you the display feature options just like that with the Spot Monitoring software. Since this card is fairly new, it will only work the the GV main system 8.01+ software.
4) If you wish to display one channel to multiple TVs, you will need to buy a module called DIS-104. This module will recieve one video signal and distribute it to four separate TVs.

Audio Equipment for Police Interview Rooms
The Louroe Model IF-4 and IF-8 Audio Interface Adapters are designed for connecting up eight Louroe microphones to a DVR that has multiple audio inputs. The units contain dual outputs (per microphone) for accommodating either an RCA input or a 3.5mm (mini jack) input connection to a DVR or sound card. In addition, the IF-4 and IF-8 receive wiring from the Louroe microphones, provide phantom power and contain a variable gain adjust per output to prevent the overdriving of signal to a soundcard. All Louroe microphones are compatible with the IF-4 and IF-8.
The Verifact Model L-DT is a desktop microphone that is designed for conducting interviews or similar applications. It contains two electret condenser microphones facing opposite directions that are mounted in a sturdy non-slip ABS plastic housing for adherence to a desktop or flat surface.

The technology, called S3 (reminds me of PS2) has far-reaching possibilities for business, governements and individuals.
From the store owner to the border security depart, The Smart Surveillance System (S3), available in conjunction with IBM's digital-video surveillance services, can analyze real-time video while it is being digitally recorded and stored over an Internet Protocol (IP) network.

Cities requiring Business Security Cameras:
Mayor Daley of Chicago is proposing an ordinance that will require businesses to install Digital Video Surveillance Systems if they are open until 4 am or if they are open more than 12 hours a day. Milwaukee is considering requiring cameras at stores that have called police three or more times in a year. Baltimore County, Maryland ordered large malls to put cameras in parking areas after a murder in one garage last year.
Some business owners complain that it is unfair burden on small business, but they are not getting the full picture. DVR Camera Security Systems will save a small business owner in the long run.
• The physical presence of a camera is a deterrence to crime in the first place.
• The Digital Video Recorded Image is a valuable tool to the Police in identifying and apprehending the offenders.
• Employees feel safer when they know the business is monitored.
• Business owners can relax easier when they know their business is monitored 24/7 and they can check on the status of their business remotely over the internet.
Michael Babitch, Dairy Queen Owner in California, praised the system he bought from Camera Security Now, “The money I have saved in employee theft and product shrinkage has more than paid for the system I installed last year”
Whether you are required by government to install Camera Surveillance systems, or you want to reap the benefits Security Cameras, Camera Security Now has the solution to Small Business Surveillance needs.

Milwaukee - Tavern Surveillance System Mandate Proposed
Milwaukee's taverns and nightclubs could be required to install security cameras to keep an eye on customers both inside and outside, under an ordinance proposed by City Committee.
Fights, shootings and rowdy behavior are frequently cited - and often disputed - when taverns are facing license suspensions or revocations, and the Committee feels that video will improve the quality of the evidence.
Tavern and Bar owners realize the need for the camera systems, but they are worried about the cost. CameraSecurityNow.com has economical solutions for the problem. We offer basic systems with everything needed for self installation, or advanced systems with professional installation.
A Good quality Camera Surveillance System will pay for itself in short order, by controlling shrinkage, employee theft and bartenders pouring free drinks.

Cheap Security Cameras are Expensive to Own
A very wise man once said “to everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven” and the same can be said of today’s CCTV Camera Security products.
The other day I came across an unfortunate individual who may have been familiar with the above phrase but still lacked guidance from a qualified consultant to understand the “purpose” of the inexpensive CCTV cameras he had purchased and installed.
Once installed it became obvious to the individual that those inexpensive cameras were, in a manner of speaking, just not going to get the job done. Specifically they could not handle the massive amount of light that streamed in from the two large plate glass walls of his corner storefront. In that environment at certain key hours of they day the cameras were completely worthless.
The individual realizing his error was now consulting with my partner and on his way to purchasing a camera with a new Wide Dynamic Technology designed specifically to handle his lighting environment.
Missing that one chance to consult with a qualified CCTV specialist can be costly. As the time and money wasted on an uneducated purchase can not be recovered. Inexpensive cameras of course can have their purpose and place in today’s CCTV Camera Security systems. But failure to understand that purpose and place can be costly.

Steve Irwin's death caught on Video
Video of 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin's last moments shows him pulling from his chest the poisonous stingray barb that killed him.
Irwin's manager John Stainton described the footage as a "terrible" experience, watching a friend die.
The camera video shows Steve swimming over the top of the ray, then the tail came up, and quickly spiked him in the chest. He then pulled the barb out out and the next minute he was dead.

About CCTV Security Cameras
Security Camera Tips: Apply Logic when picking cameras and lenses
1. Sketch out a Floor Plan:
Put in all camera locations.
Consider the distance to your surveillance zone:Are you 5 feet or 15 feet away from your surveillance target area? It is best to locate your camera as close to the surveillance area first, then choose how much zoom you need. Do you need 4mm, 8mm or 12mm lens?
2. Field of view or area of surveillance: Take photos of areas you want to cover from the proposed camera locations.
What lens you need depends what you want to see and how far away and how wide a viewing area. Wide angle and fisheye lenses are available.
3. Resolution: Do you want to capture a persons face or a car license plate? Each camera location will determine which lenses would maximize your surveillance potential. Do you need 50mm lens or standard 8mm?
4 .Vandalism potential: Will your camera be subject to damage? Damage resistant cameras are available.
5. Lighting: Is the space well lit or dimly lit. Are the lights turned off at night? Do you want to monitor the area with the lights turned off? Do you need infrared or low light cameras?
6. Budget: Just like any technology, the more you spend, the better the system you get. Keep in mind a low cost camera is better than no camera.

No light, Low Light Bullet Security Cameras
Low light Bullet Security Cameras can see in very low light conditions but require some ambient light.
No light Bullet Security Cameras have LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) that illuminate areas in total darkness.
Varifocal Bullet Security Cameras offer maximum flexibility in camera installations requiring a wide range of focal lengths.
Why are they called Bullet Cams?
Bullet cams are typically smaller cameras that are just over 2 inches long and resemble a bullet shell casing. Bullet cams utilize CCTV technology. Bullet security cameras can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications.
The Bullet Security Camera is an ideal camera for many security applications. They got their name because they are shaped like a bullet cartridge.
